In the warm blue waters of Vava'u, humpback whales arrive each July from Antarctica to mate, give birth, and rest. Curious. Calm. Present. It is one of the rarest wildlife encounters on Earth. Tonga is one of the only places you can legally enter the water with them.
We are incredibly proud to announce Earthborne's first expedition. Two departures. Six guests each. July 2026, Vava'u, Tonga.
This is not a whale watching tour. You will freedive and snorkel alongside humpbacks in some of the clearest water on Earth. You will learn to read their behaviour, understand their songs, and witness — up close — why protecting them matters.
Led by Jono Allen — BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year, marine megafauna guide, and environmental scientist — every day in the water is as educational as it is unforgettable.
Between the whale days: Tongan culture, a kava ceremony, coral reef snorkelling, ocean caves, and extraordinary food by private chef Andrea Sunna. This is a journey that changes what you pay attention to, long after you're home.

The Experience
7 hours a day in the water with humpbacks.
Five full days on the water. A 36,000 kilogram animal, close enough to feel the water move. July is peak season: the whales arrive fresh from Antarctica, calves still young, mothers resting near the surface. The encounters are close, calm, and completely unlike anything else on Earth.
In-water education led by Jono Allen.
Marine megafauna guide, environmental scientist, underwater photographer. You'll learn to read whale behaviour, understand what you're witnessing, and leave with images you're proud of.
Idyllic waterfront accommodation & Private chef.
Exclusively held for Earthborne guests. Chef Andrea Sunna's plant-forward menus designed around the rhythms of the trip. Light at dawn. Generous in the evening.
Tongan culture woven throughout.
A traditional church service. A kava ceremony. Tongan food and crafts/ We'll spend evenings with local guide, Paluki, on the cultural and spiritual relationship between the Tongan people and the humpback. This is not a backdrop. It is part of the experience.
